Baja slightly improves in Mexico's Peace Index

Baja California has been ranked 29th among the least peaceful states, according to the latest Mexico Peace Index report. This ranking indicates that the influence of criminal groups and violent acts continues to be prevalent in the state, though it has improved after being ranked last nationwide in the previous report, La Voz newspaper reported.

Recent reports indicate that Baja California is the state with the second-highest number of intentional homicides in the country. However, the incidence of these homicides decreased by 45.8% from April of last year to the same month this year, the report shows.

The Mexico Peace Index also states that Baja California had the third-highest number of homicides in 2023. The data suggests that homicide violence is closely associated with territorial conflicts among various organized crime groups, primarily related to drug trafficking routes and retail markets in Tijuana and Mexicali. Additionally, armed violence remains a structural issue affecting security in the state. Baja California ranks fourth nationwide for homicides committed with firearms, with a rate of 42.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants last year, placing it among the top five states with the highest rates of gun-related crimes.

Based on the MPI report, Baja California State Center of Economic Studies said the state has been one of the least peaceful states in Mexico in the last seven years.

The Center said the economic impact of crime in 2024 was 218 billion pesos or close to $11 billion. The figure translates into a per capita impact of 56,715 pesos or $2,835.75. According to the center性视界传媒檚 report, crime impact in Baja California equals 20% of its Gross Domestic Product.

La Voz性视界传媒檚 report reads that Governor Marina del Pilar 脕vila Olmeda acknowledged that lethal violence continues to pose a significant challenge in Baja California.

性视界传媒淲e achieved a 2.9% decrease in the intentional homicide rate between 2023 and 2024. This reduction is a first step in addressing a problem that has affected the state for years,性视界传媒 Gov. Avila told the newspaper.

The governor emphasized that this improvement in the index has allowed Baja California to rise two positions in the Mexico Peace Index, now ranking 29th nationwide. 性视界传媒淎lthough we remain one of the states facing the greatest challenges, this progress reflects that the strategies we have implemented are beginning to take effect. It compels us to redouble our efforts to sustain this trend for the benefit of all Baja Californians,性视界传媒 she added.

The governor highlighted that from April 2024 to April 2025, Baja California achieved a significant reduction in the daily average of homicides, decreasing from 7.47 to 3.87 cases per day. This reduction represents a 45.8% drop in the rate from September 2024 to April 2025, according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

性视界传媒淭he downward trend reflects the results of coordinated actions among the three levels of government aimed at containing and reducing lethal violence in the state,性视界传媒 she stated.
