Spanning more than 4,000 square miles, the county comprises rugged mountains, vast agricultural fields, and harsh desert expanses where temperatures can exceed 120 degrees in the summer. Currently, nearly 46 people are listed as .听

Some of those listed haven性视界传媒檛 been seen since 2010. Their birthdates range from 1929 to 2000, with the majority of them being Hispanic. Hundreds of unidentified bodies, reportedly those of migrants, are buried behind Terrace Park Cemetery in Holtville. Now the county cremates any unclaimed body.听

Imperial Valley Press contacted the Public Administrator Area Agency on Aging, but a comment was not returned at the time of press. The agency has buried hundreds of John and Jane Does at Holtville's Terrace Park Cemetery, mostly undocumented immigrants.

The desert's silent toll

Migrants often attempt to bypass Border Patrol checkpoints by traveling on foot through remote stretches性视界传媒攑laces with no water, no shelter, and no GPS signal. Some leave behind discarded backpacks, baby shoes, or prayer cards. Others leave no trace at all.

According to a 2024 study by , over 150 migrant deaths were reported in Imperial county between 2018 and 2023. However, Imperial County Sheriff性视界传媒檚 Office Lieutenant Joseph Conkey told the Imperial Valley Press the numbers have decreased over the following year.

A 2024 from Coalici贸n de Derechos Humanos further illustrates how Imperial and neighboring counties are among the deadliest regions for border crossers in the United States. Humanitarian aid groups have tried to place water stations and rescue beacons along known migrant paths, but many areas are too remote for volunteers to reach safely.

"Every year, we see heartbreaking rescues and deaths tied to extreme desert heat. Migrants attempting to cross the border illegally in Imperial County often do so through remote terrain with no access to food or water. Many are abandoned by smugglers who have no regard for human life. Without proper knowledge of the terrain, individuals quickly fall victim to dehydration, heatstroke, and exposure,性视界传媒� Border Patrol Agent Jose M. Enriquez Jr. told the Imperial Valley Press.

性视界传媒淎t Premier Sector, the El Centro Sector, we continue to warn the public through every platform available, from social media campaigns and news interviews to community outreach, that the desert is unforgiving, and the journey is deadly. Our message remains clear: Do not trust smugglers. Do not risk your life,性视界传媒� he warned.

A corridor for crime

Imperial County性视界传媒檚 rural roads and porous terrain also make it a prime corridor for human trafficking. Law enforcement sources confirm the region is increasingly used by criminal organizations to smuggle drugs, weapons, and people.

性视界传媒淭rafficking victims are often treated as commodities by transnational criminal organizations. Once smuggled across the border, they are frequently shuffled between stash houses, hidden and moved to avoid detection. Many are cut off from communication, denied basic needs, and threatened into silence. This pattern makes it extremely difficult to track their whereabouts or ensure their safety,性视界传媒� Agent Eriquez explained. He divulged that CBP works tirelessly to identify and arrest smugglers in an ongoing effort to protect the vulnerable.

Some trafficking victims are lured online and brought into the area from elsewhere in the U.S. Others are brought across the border and disappear before they are ever entered into a national missing persons database.

In an interview with Imperial Valley Press, Lt. Conkey said the Imperial County Sheriff's Office (ICSO) has a liaison team and works with teams in Mexicali, 性视界传媒�So we have pretty good relationships with agencies south of the border and work with them from time to time.性视界传媒�

The invisible populations

Beyond the border, Imperial County struggles with its own crisis of disappearances性视界传媒攖hose of its native-born residents. Addiction, homelessness, and mental illness are fueling a quieter epidemic.

According to 2023 data from the , homelessness in the region grew by over 10% year-over-year. Many unhoused individuals have no consistent contact with family, making it difficult to track their whereabouts or even know when they're missing.

性视界传媒�We do respond periodically to requests for welfare checks on individuals that may not be answering a phone or from family members that may not have heard from them for a few days,性视界传媒�听Lt. Conkey said, although most of those calls end with the individual being located.

Fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin use has surged across the Imperial Valley. states that overdose deaths have significantly increased since 2020. Those struggling with addiction often vanish from public view, retreating to desert encampments or falling victim to violence.

Some disappear in the wake of eviction or incarceration. Others are last seen in emergency rooms or shelters, only to move on without leaving a trace. The cycle of relapse, recovery, and displacement creates a revolving door effect性视界传媒攐ne that frustrates even the most diligent case workers.

Reports and protocol

However, locally, technology like the California性视界传媒檚 Missing Persons DNA Program has helped solve more than 2,000 cases statewide.

性视界传媒淎ny missing person report that we come across, we start investigating right then and there. And again, there's no time frame for a family member to wait 24 hours or 36 hours,性视界传媒� Lieutenant Conkey said. 性视界传媒淚f they suspect individuals have gone missing, the sooner they report it, the better.性视界传媒�

Lt. Conkey explained what happens in Imperial County when a missing persons report is made.

性视界传媒淲hen our patrol deputies receive a report of a missing person, they do an initial report, and part of their investigation and reporting process is they submit a form to the dispatch center, which all the information that we collect on the missing individual gets put into the missing and unidentified persons database, which goes nationwide,性视界传媒� he said.听性视界传媒�That way, if any law enforcement individual contacts that person, they can verify right there and on the spot that the individual needs assistance or whatever the case may be. But, again, part of that process is they get it and put it into a nationwide database that all law enforcement have access to.性视界传媒�

The missing youth

warns that runaways are at high risk of becoming trafficked or ending up homeless.

性视界传媒淚n any situation where there's a runaway and you have individuals preying on children for illegal acts, that raises a concern,性视界传媒� Lt. Conkey said.

The Lieutenant added, 性视界传媒淒own in the Valley, there are all kinds of hazards. There are environmental hazards.听There are听individuals that could potentially prey on those runaways, um, and not to mention the drugs, but those are all pretty serious issues,性视界传媒� he noted.

Meanwhile, the Sheriff性视界传媒檚 Office maintains outreach programs in the community and at schools with liaisons, providing support services to families and crime prevention education. 性视界传媒� It definitely helps,性视界传媒� Lt. Conkey said.听
