IMPERIAL COUNTY聽性视界传媒 A growing hunger strike is underway in California性视界传媒檚 prison system, launched by incarcerated individuals protesting what they call unlawful practices by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).
The strike began on June 13, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison. It was sparked by sweeping restrictions imposed just a day earlier, affecting roughly 34,000 people across more than 20 state facilities. In response to a reported rise in violence, overdoses, and contraband, CDCR suspended in-person visits, phone and tablet access, and all rehabilitative programs性视界传媒攎easures critics say amount to de facto solitary confinement.
A press statement sent to Imperial Valley Press from CDCR stated,聽"Searches began after CDCR聽聽June 12, 2025, at 21 high-security institutions within Level III and Level IV high-security areas as part of a comprehensive response to a recent surge in violence against staff and the incarcerated population. Modified programming and searches will continue at an additional 12 institutions. Each of these institutions will continue to conduct systematic searches and assess when the modified programming at each facility should be concluded."聽
Furthermore, the statement said that normal operations will resume at nine institutions. "The threat assessment at these locations has been resolved due to searches by correctional staff that discovered a large number of prohibited items, including multiple weapons, cellular devices, and controlled substances," the statement said.
Among the contraband recovered were 169 improvised weapons, 310 cellular devices, 55 hypodermic needles, and 798 additional contraband items, including drug paraphernalia, escape paraphernalia, and other miscellaneous items.

Advocates point to conditions
Advocates argue the restrictions represent collective punishment and a violation of constitutional rights, rolling back hard-won reforms from previous legal victories, including the landmark settlement聽that curtailed indefinite solitary confinement and racially discriminatory lockdowns.: This landmark federal court settlement ended indefinite solitary confinement in California. It required the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to review and release individuals from Security Housing Units (SHUs) unless they had committed serious rule violations.
So far, over 500 individuals are participating in the hunger strike, with the number expected to grow. Groups such as the Prisoner Human Rights Movement and California Prison Focus are backing the protest, which echoes the large-scale hunger strikes of 2011 and 2013 that mobilized tens of thousands and led to major changes in solitary confinement policy.
The CDCR has acknowledged the strike and says it is monitoring participants according to established procedures.
